Pappy Friday!
Well…Pappy came to my town — and fortunately I got some. After a year of playing the game, I hunted down two bottles of 15YR (PVW 20 is nowhere to be found and PVW23 is too pricey at the markup). And I also stumbled across a bottle of 2017 Parker’s Heritage Collection today.
I still have a few opportunities which I hope come to fruition in the next few days. After the week is done, I will publish a longer post deconstructing my process over the last year to get these bottles. It is a mixture of strategy, hustle, luck — and schmoozing. But If you’re interested, it will provide some insight and hopefully shorten your learning curve. For others, it might be overkill and that is why I’m not including it here.

Pennsylvanian Pappy Van Winkle Fans Have 5 Days to Enter the State’s Limited-Release Lottery
According to the Board, this year, the state’s stash includes 1,804 bottles of the five different Old Rip Van Winkle varieties that have been released for 2017. Of that collection, 134 bottles are being bundled into 40 multi-bottle packages, with the remaining 1,670 bottles being sold individually. As a result, the rights to buy these bourbons will be determined via a drawing that will see 1,710 winners in all – though the lottery includes some important provisions. First, half of the bundles and about a quarter of the individual bottles are being earmarked for licensees (meaning bars, restaurants and retailers). That immediately cuts the number of individual customers with a chance to get picked in the lottery down to just 1,275. But on the positive side, the PLCB promises that winners are limited to only one per household, and all entries will be “vetted for duplicative names, addresses, and other information,” as well as verifiable Pennsylvania addresses, to make sure the lottery pool is as fair as possible.

We are an animal sanctuary offering a forever home for a variety of animals. We have retired Draft horses, Thoroughbreds, Percherions, a Belgian, Ponies, Minis, Pigs, Sheep, Goats, Dairy Cows and even a Peacock. All of our animals are rescues and are retired…they enjoy their lives grazing and relaxing. Many are seniors and special needs so they require custom diets and medication…all things they get here. Without PEAS there would not be a Happy Ending for these animals…we believe ALL Lives Matter and are committed to providing to their needs and care FOREVER. Each year, Whisky Advocate Buying Guide reviewers collectively sample hundreds of whiskies. These include rare and extremely limited releases, as well as new and emerging labels that will find their way to shelves across the nation. To determine our Top 20, we begin by looking only at whiskies that rated “outstanding” (90 points or higher on Whisky Advocate’s 100-point scale). However, the Top 20 is not simply a collection of our highest-rated whiskies, because many of those are so limited they would be impossible for most readers to locate or purchase. Therefore, in addition to quality (based on score), our selection also prioritizes value (based on price) and availability. Buying Guide reviewers nominate whiskies based on these criteria.
After Nine Year Wait, Michter’s Releases 25 Year Old Bourbon
Michter’s Master Distiller Pamela Heilman has approved the release of Michter’s 25-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon to the company’s distributor network for sale this November. The 2017 release marks the first bottling of Michter’s 25-Year-Old Bourbon since 2008.
“I take the mentors doctor know position as the gatekeeper for releasing whiskey very seriously,” said Heilman. “When I tasted this 25 year Bourbon, I knew immediately it was perfectly aged.” Michter’s President Joseph Magliocco observed, “this whiskey has really matured beautifully. Sipping it is a magnificent experience.”
