So where the Hell is Pappy?
I used to listen to a song by Camper Van Beethoven back in the day called “Where the Hell is Bill?, but Bill is not Pappy so let’s move on. The point being it can be a little frustrating to hear of all the great finds and winners, but you got none. I’ve got none so far this year. My local store (that does a drawing) apologized saying the allotment was just so little this time around, but they may get more later. I’ve found it three out of four years at this particular place.
But I am ok with that. The hunt is not over yet!
What about you?
Plenty of newbies get it via the lottery. Hell half of them, send me emails saying I got it, but don’t really drink Bourbon so how much can I get for it. I oblige them because I know some of you really want it even if you have to pay a premium. And cost is relative. If you’ve got the funds you may not care if you are paying retail or secondary. (Who wants to camp out at a liquor store all night? Most people don’t. Even if you do, you don’t necessarily get it at retail.)
I used to be a purist, but now with the way things are — it simply is what it is. People get it who want to sell it and if someone wants to pay for it then who the hell cares. Call it what the market will bear. Ultimately, the market has its way. So may as well join the fun.
It won’t last forever.
Who knows what the next Pappy will be or when the masses will move onto the clear stuff again? But it will happen one day — just like tulips and dot coms.
Hey, but then there will be a glut of Pappy and other hard-to-find Bourbons for those of us who like it simply because it tastes good. Not because it is all the rage.
So anyway, we got a few bottles in process a 20 and maybe a 15. Probably will wait until after Christmas, but will let you know as soon as the bottles are confirmed and the auctions are finalized.
